Google Drive may allow a limited number of files: How this will affect users


Google’s cloud storage platform, Google Drive, helps users back up data unavailable on local storage. The tech giant is reportedly putting a restriction, which turns out to be an issue for several users. According to a report by Ars Technica, Google Drive is imposing a new file limit. This new restriction will limit the number of files users can store on their accounts. Users have reported facing issues with the cloud storage platform and have reported that on multiple channels.
User reports related to the issue
As per the report, some Google Drive users have recently noticed a new message on their accounts. This message says that the account has reached its “creation limit”. The message also mentions that users won’t be able to add new files until existing ones are deleted.
The report notes that this restriction has been imposed for both free accounts as well as paid Google Workspace and Google One subscribers. This limitation issue was flagged by users on Reddit as well as Google’s Issue Tracker. The first user report regarding this issue was posted in February, the report adds.
How are they affected?
Google Drive’s restriction puts a limitation on the total number of files that can be stored on the platform. Currently, the company is allowing users to store up to five million items, the report states.
The limitation will be imposed irrespective of file size and type. If the number of files hits the mentioned mark in the cloud storage platform, the issue will be triggered. The number of files will also include the ones that are stored in the trash (which Google automatically removes after every 30 days).
Whenever users reach or exceed that limit, Google Drive will show this message: “This account has exceeded the creation limit of 5 million items. To create more items, move items to the trash and delete them forever.”
One of the users reported that there were seven million items stored in the account before Google placed this restriction. Now, the user is unable to add any new files. This user and others who are in the same situation are reportedly locked out of their accounts. Moreover, the files stored in their Google Drive now show only in “read-only” mode.
What Google has to say about this
Google has also reportedly confirmed the limit to some users via support. However, the company is yet to make the Drive restriction official. The report mentions that the company has not offered any warnings to users who have reached or crossed the limit.
The company’s support page confirms that users can share up to 4 lakh files through Drive. However, Google has never mentioned any storage limit. To compare, Dropbox mentions that 3 lakh files can be synced to a computer, but it’s not the total file limit that can be stored in the account.
Why is Google putting such a restriction
Google has also explained the reason for imposing such a restriction. The company claims that this change will “safeguard to prevent misuse” of its system “ that might impact the stability and safety” of the same. The company has also mentioned that the number of users affected by this change is “vanishingly small”.
The company has also clarified that this limit applies only to the number of items one user can create in any Drive, but doesn’t affect the total file limit in Drive. This includes files uploaded to shared folders by another user. Even though these files will count towards the user’s total storage capacity, they won’t fall under the number limit.
